PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Last September a friend sent me six rolls of Kodachromes. I had to shoot them.  Sadly, I hardly had the time to do justice to them. So here they are; my last Kodachromes.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
My short first stay in Delhi ended with a concert of Sufi devotional music at the Nizamuddin Dharba, a muslim community South of the city. I was already familar with sufi chants from recordings by the inimitable Nusrat Alli Khan, one of the greatest singers of the twentieth century, bar none.

In some ways this is a conventional set - no fancy angles, mostly shot close to the action from a sitting position, so I have no idea how this is going to be received. What I tried to convey though, is the intensity of the singing, the spiritual passion that comes through the performances by these local musicians.

This project is dedicated to my friend Sohrab who almost ended up joining me that evening but was otherwise engaged.

Fragments... do they constitute a coherent project? I will let you be the judge of that. Suffice it to say that this either me at my most pretentious or lyrical - you take your pick.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Continuing on with my personal view of the corporate life (see "Sarariman Paradise") this project is a kind of rolling documentary based on a day I spent touring various facilities and plants outside Tokto in the company of six foreign executives from my firm who were visiting Japan on business.

As always what appealed to me was the quirkiness of men in a business
setting, the little expressions, moods one finds there. This time the
emphasis is not on Japanese sararimen but on Western men confronted by and sometimes amused by the Japanese way of doing things.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
We came across specters everywhere.  Unsubstantial images of a world we could only glimpse from afar.  Were we to have spent a hundred years there, we would still glimn only their sketched outlines.  Like interlopers of the pre-modern world, it seemed, we made suppositions and tried to give shape to the unfamiliar, the unrecognizable.  Like those hapless characters, whom we know from their journals, their novels and their dubious deeds, we stumbled along and made our own sense of it, suspecting all along that we knew nothing for certain . . .

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Disheartened by the indifference endemic to this site, I have decided to simplify this project and upload only those shots from the recent Tori No Ichi festival in Shinjuku that pertain to the Yakuza. This time the gangsters showed up this time in force and pretty much dominated the proceedings. No attempt at discretion, they were right there in their black suits with their pencil thin mustaches and slick hair - brazen, and in your face. My wife who comes form Shinjuku and has lived here all her life said she had never seen the yakuza this close or so many at a time - her jaw just dropped.

I don't suppose there will be much interest in this project either but I will tell you this: these furtive, sometimes blurry glimpses of Tokyo's underworld are about as revealing a bunch of portraits as I have ever taken and I sand by them.
