PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Bring on those Sufi nights! Those mad, swirling, sweaty, hash smoking Lahore nights.
These where shot in 2004, when Pakistan was still relatively safe.
My hearth goes out to all the wonderful people of Pakistan. May the country become at peace once more. Insha'Allah

JIVE Lahore.... JIVE Pakistan !

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Without actually realising it I was photographing a lot in and around the buildings from one architect: Renaat Braem.
For both "around the block" and "O joy" these buildings in my own neighbourhood and in Hoboken attracted me. I was onto something but did not see what was right in front of me.

One guy, one building style (heavily influenced by Le Corbusier).
Some of these buildings are being heavily renovated and are loosing the characteristics of the original architecture. Many are glad as these blocks are often seen as big, ugly places. Braem himself once said that Belgium was the ugliest country in the world....
These complexes are all social housing projects and most inhabitants are immigrants these days. When a block is being renovated all the tenants  have to move to other housing projects. When renovation is complete often the rent becomes higher, making it impossible for the original  tenants to return.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Ive gone tabula rasa on the entire Doel project as I was unhappy about several images (quality wise and visual impact). Some images were kept others are new. I'm sorry for those that had commented on the old set but I felt I had to take this step as the story deserves the best images I could produce
******************************************************************************

Doel, a village over 700 years old is best known for it's nuclear plant that towers over the port of Antwerp. Located right by the river Scheldt it has been a very know place for the people of Antwerp. As the port keeps expanding the village has been under threat. In 2007 the Belgian governement decided that the entire village would be demolished as it was declared unliveable due to the closeness of giant containerterminals and industry. Slowely residents began to leave after they received a letter stating that by september 2009 everybody needed to vacate their homes...

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat is a place beyond your wildest imagination. Chaos, colour, activity and sounds mix together here in a freakish blend, which has given it its unique flavour. It is the anithesis to the sophisticated and manicured lawns of Mahalaxmi Racecourse, although it is only a few hundred yards away. This is the fascinating place where Mumbai's laundry is done. Clothes are washed by hundreds of Dhobis (laundry men and women) by hand, on concrete sinks and dried in the sun, as it has been done for generations.

I would like to thank Swiss photographer Hans Peter Bärtschi for telling me about this place

The Belgian coastline must be one of the ugliest in the world...Only about 60km but thanks to the tourist activities, the Flemish coast - a deserted area a hundred years ago - is now one of the most densely populated regions. The beach however, in low season, is wonderful.

Walking for many kilometers with only the sound of the wind and the waves...an impression

"Yawn...another street project...India again...another city you say.
Ah well... that was to be expected I guess."

"But but!! It's about Delhi! You know the difference between the frantic Old and relatively structured New parts of the city...It's almost as if they're two completely different cities.
Surely that's interesting right...?"

"Pfff if you say so...."

The doc says not to listen to those voices so I bring you DELHI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes it's just another "street" project

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Modern day China is as beautiful as it is ugly, as colorful as it is gray. The old ways are disappearing fast. China's cities are growing and changing at a pace unparalled anyware in the world. Several years of economic growth have changed the country forever. The vast majority of the people however did not benifit from this growth and now the economy is collapsing around them with no safetynet, no unions and no civil rights.
I've tried to photograph this duality, the old,the new and the painful transition.
I found it very difficult to make this project so I hope you'll not spare me, if an image doesn't belong please say so.

Between all the high glass offices , traffic jams , noise you will find the harbour , Sunda Kelapa , almost a quiet spot. Large wooden ships enter here to release their cargo. These ships look much older then they are... Decades ago they used to bring spices from the other islands to ship to Europe , mainly the Netherlands. Nowadays these ships contain wood. Tropical wood to make expensive furniture, teak , meranti The longshoremen used to receive a pice of string arround their arm everytime they walked up and down and where paid for their prestations equal to the amount of strings. That time is over..these days they make about 3-11euro , depending for who they work and the sort of cargo.

Last year I covered the Belgian championship MX1 & MX2 class. These are the top professionals in this sport. Some of these pilots also compete in the world championship. Steve Ramon (nr11) is the world champion in the MX1 series.

It was very interesting for me to cover these events as I know absolutely nothing whatsoever about motorcross. I was thrown to the wolves, ate mud, shook it of and survived.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
While the four Thursdays preceding Mardi gras see numerous balls and parades, when Saturday "Gras" comes, the "Cwarmê" is officially opened by the "grosse police" who come out to announce the festivities and present the keys of the town to the "Trouv'lê", who will reign in the town until Thursday evening. "Gras", (Fat) Sunday is without a doubt the big day, known for the dance of the "Haguettes", (the principal characters of the Carnival). On Mardi gras the "Mâssis Toûr" takes place: a tour of carnival societies. The burning of he Haguète at the end of the day mark the end of the Cwarmê and the winter. Dance parties in all the bars of the city during the four carnival days.

I'm taking you very close to home....
I live near the Antwerp airport. A rather old, workers neighbourhood. Shades of grey all around. It's not bad but it looks rather run down and grim. Not much history around except for the remnants of WWII. Old forts and bunkers and of course the airport. Our neighbourhood suffered from severe air-raids so most houses are from the 50s and 60s.

So here is my neighbourhood. I'll take you to places of my youth, places I drove my BMX to, places where I smoked my first cigarette...kissed a girl for the first time...

I found a box of proof prints while cleaning out my closet. I was making way for our baby that will be born in a month or two. That room will now be hers. The amount of prints that I found was staggering. So I filled another closet, not finding the energy to sort them out. When I openend this box however a smell of fix came out (guess I didn't rince those proofs as well as I should..)But I was transported back to those endless nights in a darkroom. People tell me there's better things to do with your time then spending them in the dark, looking trough grainfinders and and watching the magic take place in the developer bath...Those people don't know the smell of fix. I do and it will never leave me.
These proofs were printed on Ilford multigrade IV.
All images shot on T-Max 100 & 400.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Amritsar (Punjabi: ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ, meaning: The Lake of the Holy Nectar,[1]) is the administrative headquarters of the Amritsar District in the state of Punjab, India. The 2001 Indian census reported the population of the city to be over 1,500,000, and that of the entire district to number just over 3,695,077.
Amritsar is located in the northwestern part of India in the State of Punjab, 32 miles (51 km) east of Lahore, Pakistan. Some have taken the name Amritsar to derive from Amŗit-saagar, meaning "The Ocean of the Nectar of Immortality".
It is home to the Harimandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, and is the spiritual and cultural center of the Sikh religion. This important Sikh shrine attracts more visitors than the Taj Mahal in Agra and is the number one destination for non-resident Indians (NRI) in the whole of India.[citation needed] This city is known for the incidents of Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in 1919 under British Rule and Operation Bluestar in 1984 under the late Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi.
The main commercial activities include tourism, carpets and fabrics, farm produce, handicrafts, service trades and light engineering. The city is popular and known for its food and culture. Amritsar is also home to Pingalwara, the home for the destitute founded by Bhagat Puran Singh, and Central Khalsa Orphanage, which was once a home to Shaheed Udham Singh, a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement.
