PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Giro.

The Giro d’Italia is one of the three grand tours in the race cycling world, together with the Tour the France and the Vuelta in Spain. Every year the Giro finishes here in Milan.

I lost interest in this sport some years ago when the sport became a bad caricature of itself. To many delusions when the next athlete you admired for the last two weeks turned out to be nothing less than a fraud (again). But, when they arrive in your backyard, you’d do what I did: You take two samples of fresh blood from the fridge (one on the spot and one for on the road ) pack your gear, grab a banana on your way out (not too green, not too yellow) and take a look.

Here’s what I got.

Pavia from the hip and the Things I never saw.

A Saturday in the early spring. It was warm, man!! it was hot!. The first warm day of the year and we (my girlfriend, her father and me) were wandering around the beautiful old city of Pavia, about half an hour trainride south of Milan. Heavily overdressed from the much colder week before, the energy I woke up with sank straight to my black leather (winter) shoes and right down into the hot pavement the moment we got out of the air-conditioned train.
But what to do? You can buy a nice pair of summer shoes and shorts for the day, but then you have to lug around your clothes for the rest of the day, which would have probably been warmer then just stop complaining and walk….walk…walk… A terrace with a nice glass of ice tea we could have found 100 meters from home.

The one thing I could come up with to save energy was, to just hang the camera on my shoulder, turn and shoot. Let them on Holik (you) complain about the lack of focus, the strange exposures and the awkward compositions. The results where so dramatic that I laughed all the way back on the train looking at the small screen in the back of the camera. But as in many occasions photoshop is a photographers friend in need and after some tweaking, cropping, blurring and more photoshopverbs I don’t know the names of the dust was slowly starting to clear. Not that they are suddenly brilliant photo’s, far from that, but seen together, the things I never saw somehow complete my memory of the things I did see, but didn’t document, that warm and sunny day.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A small trip deep inside fantasy world. Strange abstractions and colourful faded memories. Where they real? All those people I met, I can’t remember any of them now, not their faces not their voices, “Niente!”. But still there are pictures that prove their existence. How did they get here? Did I make those? Is it possible to bring a camera inside your dreams? If so, maybe I should start to fear the night more ( or at least the sleep that comes with the night).

Like a mouse inside a maze, I’m wandering around seeing things that are not there. Illusions? Soon I’ll wake up and discover it was all a dream. Gabriel Garcia Marquez once wrote that a story he’d never written was about a man that dreamed he was sleeping, dreaming the same dream. And in the second dream he was dreaming the same dream again in exactly the same room. At the moment the alarm sounded when it was time to wake up. He didn’t knew whether he woke up in the real world or in his first dream. Foolish as he was he decided to fall asleep again to go to the second dream and wake up there to see if it was as real as this. In the end he’d lost count which dream he was dreaming and couldn’t find the way back out of his dreams…

Illusion and reality, both tangled in a web of twisted memories and lies. The dictionary explains that illusion is; A false representation of the reality, while the same dictionary explains that reality is; All of your experiences that determine how things appear to you…

Even that doesn’t make sense to me at this point, I think I go back to bed, to sleep, to dream, to wake up…

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The pearl of Holland…

Surrounded by deep, dark woods, wetlands and bogs somewhere in the north of the Netherlands, lies a part the country hidden in the open sandy grounds ‘the pearl of Holland’. Villages and small cities scattered around in the landscape, surrounded by meadows, heather fields and forests, ruled birds of prey, foxes and snakes.
An accidental train goes by over the stripe in the horizon, some birds fly up and a curious cow points her head towards the shiny yellow thing, never stopping to chew. But before the sound of metal over metal will reach you it has been swallowed by the mud and all you hear is the strong, cold land-wind coming from the east.
Far away from the noise and colours of advertising, far away from the horns of taxi drivers and the bells of trams. Three cars and a traffic light is called heavy traffic here and not being alone in the bakery is called in the queue.
Some call it home because one step off the paved track will leave you knee-deep in the earth, I call it home because this is where I’m born and raised. This project is presented as pages from an old book with black and white photo’s inside cropped to panoramic landscapes.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Gatherings from Milan…
A theatre of people

Photoholik came at a funny time, after my last moving last summer I had gathered all negatives and positives into big moving boxes with the intention to keep them there till further notice. Now in the last days it was time to open those boxes to see what was in there. Hundreds of negatives that had never been scanned or seen the red light of a darkroom passed my eyes. From them I made a small selection with the mutual background that they were all taken here in Milan during my numerous visits the last couple of years.
Milan to me looks like a theatre of people and I do not mean extravagant, strange or outrageous. But more a lifestyle I did not know, a great tranquillity inside an immense buzzing metropolis that is crawling inside every free ince of space… Bankers, thiefs and laywers vs. saints, seekers and retired.
Sometimes it feels like Vladimir Horowitz rises from the Toscanini family tomb in Cimitero Monumentale to play one more encore and Scarlatti fills the air on the busy streets and squares, the only one moving in normal speed is me, and moments later it’s just “Traumerei” inside my head and it all happens around me, to fast to hang on…
Perhaps you think, just another countryboy who packed his bags and moved to the city, I won’t fool you, that’s true.
