I'd gone off night shooting for a while, afraid to repeat myself endlessly, save for a few recent shots of the annual dance festivals where I live in Tokyo.
And then I arranged to meet my friend Tushar at Karim's, a famous though overrated Mughal restaurant in the Nizamuddin sufi community of South Delhi. I had been there earlier in the day, to suss out the place and was intrigued by it, but I quickly realized that it is at night that Nizamuddin comes into its own. It might be going too far to say that night liberates the folks who live there but their whispers grow stronger, they assume even more of a conspiratorial air, the bearded Taliban-like men wolf down plates of sweets without shame and the whole town vibrates with a fervor that comes partly from their faith and partly from the childlike joy that comes from moving about freely at night among your own...
