PHOTO DESCRIPTION

This ghat is the world's biggest open-air laundry, which uses a coding system not dissimilar to that used by the tiffin-wallahs. Some 5000 dhobi-wallahs (laundry-men) use acres of concrete troughs and barrels to soak, beat and scrub laundry from all over Bombay. It's then spun in hand-cranked centrifugal spin dryers, line dried, ironed, tied into the appropriate bundles and returned the next morning to the customer. The city's dirty laundry is apparently coded, collectivised and sorted into whites, colours, trousers, skirts, shirts etc and then resorted at the end of the laundry process.
