For years now I yearned to go to Battambang. Old French colonial town lying quiet near a river, second city in Cambodia but really just a small provincial burg, what could go wrong?

And so I talked Mrs F to tag along with me on a HAIR RAISING 5 hours speed drive from Phnom Penh to this place where we hoped to come face to face with "the real Cambodia." Well I guess it was a little TOO real for us if you catch my drift.

There are several problems with Battambang:
1. For its size this is one seriously polluted town where incessant smoke from motorbike and 4-wheel drive cars mix with the constant dust to create teh need in you to be elsewhere...anywhere.
2. The local population (remember Battambang was in Khmer Rouge hands way into the 1990s!!! is...surly, there is no other word for it - I'm talki ng some real scowling, unsmiling faces, perhaps a reflection of the fact that a) they were a KR town until very recently and b) they are just not used ot foreigners. Hell, the place reminded me of, wait for it...Japan ;o)
3. AT night the place is completely dark - I don't mean dusky I mean pitch black. I could not get my Sonnar 50mm F1.5 to focus on any damn thing and I love to shoot at night. No way Jose.
4. There is nowhere really to sit and relax or eat a decent meal at night except for the CHinese owned White Rose and the Smoking Pot which are okay but really very limited.

Having said that we took two trips out of town into the Cambodfian jungle which is vefry beautiful, rode on the bamboo train which will provide one of my stories, ran into no less than three weddings which I found fascinating and really enjoyed shooting so... there was a lot to observe but no, I would absolutely NOT recommend that anyone go there. Try Kampot instead in the South. Or the obligatory Siem Reap for Angkor Wat.
